Fruits of the Spirit: Kindness

Galatians 5:22-23 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.”

The MacArthur Study Bible: “kindness. Tender concern for others, reflected in a desire to treat others gently, just as the Lord treats all believers.”

Scripture: 2 Timothy 2:24-25 “And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth…”

Proverbs 21:22 “Whoever pursues righteousness and kindness will find life, righteousness, and honor.”

Titus 3:1-7 “Remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work, to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy toward all people. For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another. But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”

Micah 6:8 “He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”

Ephesians 4:32 “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.”

The word kindness also can mean gentleness and mercy. God bestows kindness on all His creation through common grace, and He lavishes kindness on His own children. He saves our sinful souls from eternal damnation, walks with us throughout life, and finally brings us home into His arms, where we will glorify Him perfectly, forever.

When we keep our eyes peeled for His mercies, which are new every morning, we see His kindness grace every day of our lives. From the strength He gives during hard times, to the joy He gives through His Word, from “little” things like the marvels of creation outside our windows, to the “big” blessings like family and friends, God’s kindness is evident all around us.

As His children, we are called to be like Him. We must show kindness to our enemies, our loved ones, and strangers. Only through the power of the Holy Spirit are we able to do this, but this week may we seek opportunities to show others a glimpse of the kindness God has so mercifully, and abundantly, shown to us. May we be a reflection of His mercies as we proclaim all He has done for us!

* “Thy loving-kindness, Lord I sing

of grace and life the sacred spring.

In blood, ore flowing, rich and free,

in loving-kindness shed for me.

I to Thy mercy seat repair,

and find Thy loving-kindness there.

And when to Thy sweet Word I go,

Thy loving-kindness there I know.”
