Fruits of the Spirit: Goodness

Galatians 5:22-23 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.”

The MacArthur Study Bible: “goodness. Moral and spiritual excellence manifested in active kindness. Believers are commanded to exemplify goodness.”

Scripture: Galatians 6:6-10 “Let the one who is taught the word share all good things with the one who teaches. Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.”

3 John 1:11 “Beloved, do not imitate evil but imitate good. Whoever does good is from God; whoever does evil has not seen God.”

Goodness is a hard act to live out. Scripture tells us that no man is good (Romans 3:9-11), and we can only be made holy by the blood of Jesus. Paul talks about the struggle to fight the evil desires of the flesh and to instead do good (Romans 7:14-20). Yet, Scripture commands us to be kind, do good, and live righteously for the glory of God.

Although difficult, God does give us the tools needed for the task. He Himself is the example of goodness that we are to follow. By being in His Word, spending time in prayer, and building relationships with other believer’s, we are encouraged to do not just good things, but righteous things, motivated by a desire to serve and glorify God.

More than forced acts of kindness, we’re called to exemplify goodness with a servant’s heart. Jesus served willingly and sacrificially, so we must do the same. As we study His holy example, and as the Holy Spirit transforms our hearts, we’ll be able to love others with a Godly love, to do good for His glory – filled with the kindness given by the Holy Spirit.

God is good, all the time. So may we be found praising Him for His perfect goodness and gladly proclaiming His greatness to those around us!

*“God is so good,

God is so good,

God is so good,

He’s so good to me.

He cares for me,

He cares for me,

He cares for me,

He’s so good to me.

God answers prayer,

God answers prayer,

God answers prayer,

He’s so good to me.”
