Standing on His Promises

You know the seasons of life where you’re waiting on God and you balance between peace and worry? Some days it’s hard to tell our hearts what to believe. So here’s a “cheat sheet” with exactly what we can cling to when we wait.

We Cling to God’s Character.

God is forgiving, and abounding in steadfast love for us.

“For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving, abounding in steadfast love to all who call upon you.” Psalms 86:5

God is good.

“You are good and do good; teach me your statutes.” Psalms 119:68

God is Sovereign.

“I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted.” Job 42:2

God is righteous.

“For the LORD is righteous; he loves righteous deeds; the upright shall behold his face.” Psalms 11:7

God is holy.

“As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, ‘You shall be holy, for I am holy.’ ” 1 Peter 1:14-15

God is all-knowing.

… “remember the former things of old; for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose…” Isaiah 46:9-10

We Cling to His Past Faithfulness.

The Psalmists were well acquainted with waiting. Their hearts were often burdened, yet they wrote with such confidence in the Lord. They had seen God be their delivery and sustainer many times, and would recount those times in their songs, at times for their own benefit and also for the benefit of those around them.

“I waited patiently for the LORD; he inclined to me and heard my cry. He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure… I have told the glad news of deliverance in the great congregation; behold, I have not restrained my lips, as you know, O LORD. I have not hidden your deliverance within my heart; I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation; I have not concealed your steadfast love and your faithfulness from the great congregation.” Psalms 40:1-2 & 9-10

We cling to His promises.

He will not withhold what is good for my life.

“For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD bestows favor and honor. No good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly. O LORD of hosts, blessed is the one who trusts in you!” Psalms 84:11-12

God will direct my path.

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6

God is for me and He cares about me.

“You have kept count of my tossings; put my tears in your bottle. Are they not in your book? Then my enemies will turn back in the day when I call. This I know, that God is for me. In God, whose word I praise, in the LORD, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can man do to me?” Psalms 56:8-11

We cling to His Word.

His Word gives us life.

“Let your steadfast love come to me, O LORD, your salvation according to your promise; then shall I have an answer for him who taunts me, for I trust in your word. And take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth, for my hope is in your rules. I will keep your law continually, forever and ever, and I shall walk in a wide place, for I have sought your precepts. I will also speak of your testimonies before kings and shall not be put to shame, for I find my delight in your commandments, which I love. I will lift up my hands toward your commandments, which I love, and I will meditate on your statutes. Remember your word to your servant, in which you have made me hope. This is my comfort in my affliction, that your promise gives me life.” Psalms 119:41-50

We cling to the hope He brings.

He is coming again and we will be in paradise with Him forever!

“ ‘He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.’ ’’And he who was seated on the throne said, ‘Behold, I am making all things new.’ Also he said, ‘Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.’ And he said to me, ‘It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment. The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God and he will be my son.’ ” Revelation 21:4-7

When we cling to all of these things, we are really clinging to the very heart of God. And when we’re near His heart, our own is in the best place it can possibly be.
