“I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways. I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word.” Psalms 119:15-16
One reason I love to write is because it helps me catalog all the lessons God has taught me. From the moments God’s grace kept me going to the brighter moments of pure joy, I have often thought of Mary’s verse: “But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart.” Luke 2:19
When we take note of what God is teaching us and marvel at His character, our thoughts slowly shape our hearts.
Hearts that were once self-centered become slightly less so. Hearts focused on our needs begin to see God’s provisions. We receive answers to questions because our wondering hearts lead us to God’s word to dig for truth.
Now, I’m a chronic over thinker, so sometimes I ponder too much on the wrong things. I can dwell too heavily on what I don’t have or sit too long on an insult someone said to me. It’s hard to keep thoughts where they should be, which is why it’s so important we choose to direct them.
The Bible talks about what we should be thinking on. Philippians 4:8 says, “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”
The Psalmist pushes us, too, to mediate on the holy ways of God: “I will remember the deeds of the LORD; yes, I will remember your wonders of old. I will ponder all your work, and meditate on your mighty deeds. Your way, O God, is holy. What god is great like our God? You are the God who works wonders; you have made known your might among the peoples. You with your arm redeemed your people, the children of Jacob and Joseph.” Psalms 77:11-15
Directing our thoughts toward God, meditating on Scripture, and praying for strength to let go of thoughts we shouldn’t be having will influence both our emotions and actions.
Dwelling on truth helps us keep perspective and give glory to God in our hearts.
So friends, decide today to “Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.”
Let us put to death sin and strive after righteousness. “And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly…
“And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”
(Colossians 3:2, 15, 16a, & 17)
Think on truth, to His glory and your good!
