As a worrier, I often struggle with feeling the need to control everything. But obviously I can’t. I have to trust the Lord to take care of all the things I can’t take care of.
As someone who struggles with a few health issues, I often feel inadequate to meet the days tasks with a can-do attitude. I have to trust the Lord to give me strength.
As a wife and mother, I often feel that though I do my absolute best to point my family to the Lord, sometimes I am a poor example, and I have to trust the Lord for grace to cover my sins.
My power and strength and grace are not sufficient. But Christ’s are.
Yet still, sometimes I (wrongly) worry and doubt.
Recently in dealing with a health issue, I felt afraid. What if I wasn’t doing enough to take care of it? What if we waited too long to go in? What if the doctor was wrong about my diagnosis? As I was sharing my concerns with God, a thought popped into my head : “The Lord will keep you.”
I looked in the Bible for that phrase and landed on Psalm 121 entitled “My help comes from the Lord.”
“1 I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? 2 My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.”
Sovereign Creator, He holds all things together and will be my help and stay.
“3 He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.”
He does not wear out like I do. He will not turn away from His people for even a moment.
“5 The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is your shade on your right hand. 6 The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.”
He is my Protector, my keeper. My life is safely in His hands.
“7 The LORD will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore.”
More important than all the rest, He will sustain my faith forevermore.
When my body fails and my heart falters, the Lord will keep my soul.
So I can find rest knowing:
He will strengthen me on the weak and fatigued days.
His truth gives joy on the sad days.
He gives peace in my fears,
and forgives me for my failings.
When my heart is heavy,
when my striving accomplishes nothing,
when I am powerless to provoke the change I want to see,
the Lord will sustain me through it all.
As long as He has a purpose for my living, He will give all that is needed to sustain my life. He will give me strength to persevere in faith, until I stand before the throne of Christ and fall down at His feet, completely unworthy to be in His presence. Yet, He will pronounce me clean under His blood, and I shall give thanks proclaiming,
“The Lord has kept me…and He will always keep my near His side.”
