Thus Far the Lord Has Helped Me

Then Samuel took a stone and set it between Mizpah and Shen, and named it Ebenezer, saying, “Thus far the LORD has helped us.” (1 Samuel 7:12, NASB)

Note from the John MacArthur Study Bible:

“Thus far the Lord has helped us. This expression means that the Lord was the One responsible for getting Israel to this point. He was Israel’s Sovereign One in times of both faithfulness and rebellion. He fought the battles and provided the blessings.”

Anxiety. I hate it. It’s a joy-steeler.

I’m slowly learning to pray through it. Especially during those long nights of tossing and turning.

Last night was one of those. As I laid there, trying to cast my cares on God, I was reminded of this verse.

“Thus far the Lord has helped us.

Every single time I woke up that night my mind kept replaying that comforting truth: “Thus far the Lord has helped me.”

Oh how much He has brought me through.

How faithful He has been in the past. If I can look back and remind myself of His character, I don’t have to dread the future.

Anxiety is calmed when I rest in God’s capable hands.

I need not worry.

* “Through many dangers, toils, and snares, I have already come.

His grace has brought me safe thus far.

And His grace will lead me home.”
